Jacques Auxiette - Biography

Born on December 3rd, 1940, in Monlevicq (Indre) his education started in Montluçon (Allier). He then attended the University of Clermont Ferrand, obtaining a Science Degree, followed by a Higher Diploma in Mathmatics. From 1964 to 1969 he was in the army in Tunisia, before joining the Pierre Mendès France Lycée in 1970, where he became Proctor (?) in 1972, and in 1983 was named Principal (until 1989). Jacques Auxiette is a widower with two children.

Political Activities

As an active trade union member of UNEF, he entered the PSU party in 1970, and subsequently joined the Socialist Party in 1973, becoming that same year Secretary of the PS Sector in La Roche sur Yon, before becoming the First Federal Secretary of the Socialist Party (1986-1990).

Mayor of La Roche sur Yon for 27 years

Elected Mayor of La Roche sur Yon in 1977, on the "Left Union" list, he confirmed and has maintained his ability to reunite, within the "Départment" and within the Region.
Councillor General of the North Sector of La Roche sur Yon (1979-1985) and Regional Councillor of the "Pays de La Loire" (1977-1983 and again since 1986).
He again confirmed his capacity to reunite by creating, in 1994, the "Community of Districts of the Yonnais Area", of which he has been President several times(...   ) and of which he is currently Vice President. He is President of "Pays Yon & Vie" which groups 2 main inter-town areas (23 towns).


National and International Activities

Since 1984 he has been a member of the Management Committee of the French Association of Mayors and he is also a member of the Board of the Federation of Medium-sized Towns.

From 1983 to 1987 he was an Administrator of the National School of Administration (ENA) and he is also a member of the Higher Council of Territorial Public Function (CSFPT) and remains attached to the French tradition of public service of high quality and serving the general interest.

President of the Group of Authorities Responsible for Transport (GART) (1989-2001), Jacques Auxiette was also behind the modernisation of public transport, working on the development of urban transport, as well as on the decentralisation of the Regional Express Trains (TER).  He is head of the Transport Commission of the CCRE.

Finally, convinced that local authorities have an important role to play in sustainable development, peace and the creation of worldwide citizenship, he has been very active internationally : he is a member of the National Commission of Decentralized Cooperation, Treasurer of the Worldwide Federation of United Cities (FMCU) and was a member of the French delegation of the worldwide summit held in Johannesburg.  He is a member of the Management Committee of the French Association of Town Councils & Regions of Europe (AFCCRE). He is also a founding member of the new worldwide organisation of local authorities : Cities & Local Government United.
