Regional councillors are elected for 4 years, in a proportional two-round ballot. In the March 2010 elections, the list headed by Jacques Auxiette won.

Jacques Auxiette was elected president of the Regional Council of the Pays de la Loire by the 93 regional councillors: 45 women and 48 men; 35 elected representatives for Loire-Atlantique, 20 for Maine-et-Loire; 7 for Mayenne; 14 for Sarthe; 17 for Vendée.

The president of the Regional Council holds the executive power and is responsible for regional administration. He is supported by the consultation work of 9 committees, specialised per sector, composed of the regional councillors.

The budget of the Regional Council of the Pays de la Loire was 1,4 billion euros in 2009*.
